Issue No. 1

La Mafia, fog machine lattes, and where to take Mom this weekend

Issue No. 1 — La Mafia, Fog Machine Lattes, Mother's Day at SPI

Hey everyone,

Welcome to the very first issue of The Border Weekend. If you're reading this, you're officially an early adopter.

I started this newsletter because I was tired of hearing the same two things: "There's nothing to do in the Valley," and "I didn't know that was happening until I saw it on Instagram the next day." The 956 has incredible food, a booming space coast, and a culture you can't find anywhere else in Texas. You just need to know where to look.

Here is everything worth your time in Brownsville, SPI, and the RGV this weekend.

🚀 The Big One: 180th Anniversary of the Battle of Palo Alto

If you want to do something genuinely unique this weekend, head out to the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park on Saturday morning. They are commemorating the 180th anniversary of the very first major battle of the U.S.-Mexican War, which happened right here in our backyard.

It's not just a boring history lecture—they're doing full living history programs, hands-on art activities, and Ranger talks. It's a great way to spend a few hours outside and actually learn about the ground we walk on.

☕ The Vibe Check: Café Locura

We have to talk about Café Locura in Brownsville. This place is the definition of an experience.

You walk in through a fog machine, there are neon signs everywhere, a slide that drops into a foam pit, and they play 432 Hz focus beats. But the real draw is the menu—specifically the edible glitter lattes. Try the Lavender Honey Latte. It's wild, it's trending, and it's exactly the kind of local creativity we love to see.

That's it for Issue No. 1. If you enjoyed this, do me a huge favor and forward it to one friend in the 956 who needs weekend plans.

See you next Thursday.
